What to look for when recruiting temp drivers

Hiring temp drivers often makes sense, as either it is hard to recruit permanent staff, given the heavy demand and particularly around the run up to Christmas, or because you only need then resource now and again. Given the high demand you may need to engage multiple agencies to be able to find a good driver, who meets your needs.

Irrespective of the vehicle they will be driving, when looking to hire someone you’ll need to ensure they have the correct qualifications and strong experience. Agencies can also help you through the sometimes confusing license requirements.

But to get you started, here’s an overview: Firstly there no use of the terms HGV (Heavy Good Vehicle) and LGV (Light Goods Vehicle) in practice. Next, the common terms Class 1 and Class 2 licences have been superseded with C+E and C provisions respectively due to European harmonisation. Finally the driver must be over 18 years old and hold a category B license, although more likely they will have gained a category C+E provision to be able to take on the majority of jobs.

But what do all these classes mean? AM, P and Q - mopeds; A1, A2 and A - motocycles; B1 - light vehicles and quad bikes; B - cars, up to 3.5 tons; C1 - medium sized vehicles, up to 7.5 tons; C - over 3.5 tons, D1 - minibuses; and D buses. In addition, an ‘E’ is added to signify a trailer - for example: C+E. There are other more specific classes, but these are the most common.

However, if you explain clearly what you need in terms of lorry weight / size to reputable recruitment agencies they will be able to provide drivers with the right qualifications and licenses. They will also ensure that they have checked the drivers don’t have a criminal record and have the right the work in the UK. Contract drivers will also have a number of years of experience also.

Typically agencies will not supply vehicles themselves with the driver, but some may be able to provide a complete end-to-end service if that’s what is required. But be very clear who is providing insurance, and on what terms - i.e. fully comprehensive or just 3rd party.

You must also need to let the agency know if you require the driver to carry out any additional duties, such as loading / unloading or dealing with any paperwork required as they collect or drop-off loads, be qualified to deal with any particular hazardous loads, or drive abroad.

It goes without saying that you will be responsible for the vehicle supplied - which must be in working order, safe to drive and fully licensed.

So this will have given you an overview of the main things to bear in mind when hiring driving staff from agencies.

Leeds is a city in the county of West Yorkshire, England and falls within the LS7 postcode district.

The fourth largest UK town, with a population of around 761,481 people, Leeds is the largest legal and financial centre after London, with companies such as First Direct and CYBG headquartered in the city.

As a major centre of wool production during the Industrial Revolution, Leeds has maintained a very strong manufacturing presence, and is the UK’s biggest manufacturing employer, with more than 144,000 people employed in manufacturing in the Leeds City Region with companies such as Arla Foods, Asda and Northern Foods.

With 4 universities based in Leeds, the Leeds region has also a strong tradition of innovation.

While Leeds is already well connected to the rest of the country and internationally with Leeds Bradford International Airport, the completion of the second phase of the High Speed 2 train line (HS2) reducing the journey time from London to Leeds to 1 hour 28 minutes by 2033 should boost the fastest growing economy outside the South East even further.

Average earnings in Leeds were £33,137 per annum in 2017 with employment rates of 75.5%.

Leeds City Region has the highest rate of private sector growth in the UK and is home to the largest higher education cluster outside of London with 9 leading universities producing 39,000 highly skilled graduates every year.

109,000 companies are established in the region. Leeds City Region Enterprise Zone, 2 miles from the city centre, covers 142 hectares of land and offers start-ups, SMEs and largest companies attractive incentives such as reduced business rates over a five year period, £275,000 investments grants, and enhanced capital allowances for eligible companies.

Leeds is one of the cities chosen as part of the Northern Powerhouse programme to boost the economic potential of the north of the UK, alongside Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield, and is expected to receive £573m of public investment over a period of six years, and a further £420m over 20 years to deliver the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund for rail and road.

Leeds unemployment levels at 3.9% as of March 2019 are lower than the UK’s average at 4.1%. While Leeds City Region is a near £70bn economy, its industrial productivity is lower than the national average. Bridging the productivity gap in the region could help bring an extra £11bn a year to the local economy, according to the LEP, the Leeds Enterprise Partnership.

We hope that your business will benefit from the Northern Powerhouse investment and expand in the coming years - if you're looking for temporary staff to help you in that expansion, look no further and try TempaGoGo today!
