What to look for when recruiting temp drivers

Hiring temp drivers often makes sense, as either it is hard to recruit permanent staff, given the heavy demand and particularly around the run up to Christmas, or because you only need then resource now and again. Given the high demand you may need to engage multiple agencies to be able to find a good driver, who meets your needs.

Irrespective of the vehicle they will be driving, when looking to hire someone you’ll need to ensure they have the correct qualifications and strong experience. Agencies can also help you through the sometimes confusing license requirements.

But to get you started, here’s an overview: Firstly there no use of the terms HGV (Heavy Good Vehicle) and LGV (Light Goods Vehicle) in practice. Next, the common terms Class 1 and Class 2 licences have been superseded with C+E and C provisions respectively due to European harmonisation. Finally the driver must be over 18 years old and hold a category B license, although more likely they will have gained a category C+E provision to be able to take on the majority of jobs.

But what do all these classes mean? AM, P and Q - mopeds; A1, A2 and A - motocycles; B1 - light vehicles and quad bikes; B - cars, up to 3.5 tons; C1 - medium sized vehicles, up to 7.5 tons; C - over 3.5 tons, D1 - minibuses; and D buses. In addition, an ‘E’ is added to signify a trailer - for example: C+E. There are other more specific classes, but these are the most common.

However, if you explain clearly what you need in terms of lorry weight / size to reputable recruitment agencies they will be able to provide drivers with the right qualifications and licenses. They will also ensure that they have checked the drivers don’t have a criminal record and have the right the work in the UK. Contract drivers will also have a number of years of experience also.

Typically agencies will not supply vehicles themselves with the driver, but some may be able to provide a complete end-to-end service if that’s what is required. But be very clear who is providing insurance, and on what terms - i.e. fully comprehensive or just 3rd party.

You must also need to let the agency know if you require the driver to carry out any additional duties, such as loading / unloading or dealing with any paperwork required as they collect or drop-off loads, be qualified to deal with any particular hazardous loads, or drive abroad.

It goes without saying that you will be responsible for the vehicle supplied - which must be in working order, safe to drive and fully licensed.

So this will have given you an overview of the main things to bear in mind when hiring driving staff from agencies.

Hiring temps in Leicester

A versatile city with deep roots in the textile industry, Leicester City Region is one of the most active in the country. If you're a local and growing business looking for temporary support in the area, TempaGoGo, an online comparison website for temporary recruitment agencies, can help you find the best recruitment agencies for you to work with in Leicester.

Leicester is a city in the county of Leicestershire, England and falls within the LE1 postcode district and in 2017 saw average earnings of £29,586 per annum. Leicester has a population of around 443,760 and is the UK's 11th largest town.

In Leicester the biggest employment sectors are production, health and retail. It has the second largest economy in the East Midlands, coming behind Nottingham. Historically it was associated with the clothing, footwear and textile industries, and today some business that was lost to the Far East is now coming back.

Next and Boden are located in the City, as well as many other large scale employers including Brantano Footwear, Caterpillar, Dunelm Mill, Hastings Insurance, Shoe Zone, Everards, KPMG, Mazars, Santander banking, British Gas, British Telecom, Topps Tiles and DHL.

The city is well connected by road, but also rail. A direct line to London’s St Pancras makes it very easy to get to Paris, Lille and Brussels.

Leicester, with its £19bn economy, was voted as one of the UK’s best cities to do business with and bring up families. The home of 3 leading universities, Leicester’s growth has been boosted by the city’s Waterside regeneration plans with a planned investment of £250m, which should create 300 new homes in the north of the city centre, with a mix of residential apartments, student complexes, business park, hotels and retail area in the from Great Central Station.

According to PriceWaterHouse Coopers’ Good Growth for Cities index, Leicester was ranked one of the top 10 strongest economies in the UK in 2018. Leicester’s ambition is to be the most productive economy in the Midlands contributing at least £30bn each year to the UK economy by 2030.

Tourism also plays an important role in the local economy with high profile attractions such as Curve (the city’s theatre), the National Space Centre (museum of space and astronomy) and Twycross Zoo.

Due to the city’s manufacturing heritage, 31.2% of the active population in Leicester is still employed in the manufacturing and production sector, which is almost twice as much as the rest of the UK (16.6%). Almost 1 out of 5 workers in Leicester doesn’t have any qualifications, which is more than double the UK average (7.8%). This can explain why Leicester suffered from unemployment rates which are higher than the UK average, at 5.9%, vs. 4.1% in Great Britain, and low hourly pay (£10.84 per hour for full time workers vs. £14.36 in the UK on average).

If you're struggling to find temporary staff in Leicester, don't give up! Instead of wasting time calling local agencies one by one, simply do it on line on TempaGoGo. It takes a couple of minutes, and agencies with suitable staff will get back to you within minutes.
