What to look for when recruiting temp office staff

There are many good reasons why hiring temps is a great solution to office staffing needs: perhaps you need to cover for a person on holiday, long term illness or maternity cover; have a project that needs to expand its team to meet key deadlines, or requires specialist skills for a short period; or even as a way to trial a person in a position, before offering them a full-time job - aka temp-to-perm. Whatever your motivation and need there are a few key things you should bear in mind when hiring.

Firstly, write a good job spec of what you want the person to do. There are many online that can be used as a starting point - for example we provide them for all our jobs. But make sure its adapted to your needs, and not only includes tasks, but also something about your company’s culture and why someone would want to work there: good temp workers will have a choice too! It will also help the agencies select and offer you the best people, and help avoid painful situations such as when the candidate turns up and they can’t “use excel pivot tables” for example.

Secondly, engage multiple agencies on each role - which of course TempaGoGo makes super simple. You are going to get a better range of candidates to choose between, and then be enable to check that you are really paying the right price, and perhaps negotiate a better rate. When negotiating bear in mind the agency will take the difference between the candidate pay and what you are paying, but will have to cover the candidate’s national insurance and pension contributions as well as their own costs.

Third, you should interview anyone who will be around for more than a week - you’ll be surprised how much disruption the wrong person can be, not just because of the hassle of finding a replacement, but loss of actual productivity. The interview needn’t be long, multi-round, panel affair - just a 10 minute chat could provide the reassurance you need. Clearly, for more demanding technical roles, such as project managers you will want to delve a bit deeper.

When the temp starts working try and treat them as one of the team - not just someone who will be gone in a few days. Everyone likes to feel part of a team. At the end of the assignment give them a little feedback - good points and opportunities to improve. That way they are more likely to want to return for a future opportunity, or maybe go permanent - just remember that you will owe the agency a fee if this is the case.

During the assignment stay in regular contact with the agency - good agencies will check in. Raise any issues early, so the consultant can have a chance to resolve them, or in worst case provide a new temp.

The finally bear in mind that for all the formal contracts, timesheets and technology we are still dealing with people - they might be late for good reasons, or be under-the-weather on some days.

Follow these points and you should find great staff that help you and your business.

London is a city in the county of City of London, Greater London, England and falls within the EC4A postcode district and in 2017 saw average earnings of £50,481 per annum.

The largest city in the UK with 32 boroughs, it’s also the second largest city in Europe after Paris.

It benefits from a varied economy, from financial and professional services institutions in the City and Canary Wharf, to media, entertainment businesses in the West End and manufacturing and industrial companies in Park Royal and East London. Half of the FTSE 100 companies are headquartered in London.

As one of the most visited cities in the world, London is well connected to the rest of the world with 5 international airports (Heathrow, City, Stansted, Luton, Gatwick, Southend) which experience the largest passenger traffic in the world.

London has a population of around 8,615,246 people, with employment rates at 74.8%, slightly under the UK average at 75.8%, which represents 4.7 million Londoners in work.

According to the Office for National Statistics official labour data, 14% of all the economically active people in the UK are located in London. More than half (53%) of all Londoners have higher qualifications (NVQ4 level or above), a proportion which is much higher than the rest of the UK, at 39%. A higher proportion (58%) of Londoners are also employed in senior roles (e.g., managers, directors, senior officials), vs. the rest of the country, at 47%.

The top 3 sectors of employment in London are professional, scientific and technical activities (13.8% of all individuals employed), followed by wholesale and retail (10.3%), and health and social care (10.0%).

While the UK National Minimum Wage has been set at £8.21 per hour since April 2019, the London Living Wage was set at £10.55 in 2018/19 by the Living Wage Foundation, 17% higher than the £9.00 per hour Living Wage recommended by the Foundation for the rest of the country. This reflects higher costs of living in London. ONS data actually shows that Londoners employed on a full-time basis earn on average £18.69 per hour, an average hourly pay which is 30% higher than the rest of the country.

In the summer 2019, there was a dramatic reduction of jobs available (-50% year-on-year) and job seekers (-19% vs. last year) in London, according to Morgan McKinley Employment Monitor. While employment levels in the financial services sector have been impacted by the uncertainties surrounding Brexit, jobs in technology have risen by 60% since 2010 in the UK capital.
