What to look for when recruiting temp drivers

Hiring temp drivers often makes sense, as either it is hard to recruit permanent staff, given the heavy demand and particularly around the run up to Christmas, or because you only need then resource now and again. Given the high demand you may need to engage multiple agencies to be able to find a good driver, who meets your needs.

Irrespective of the vehicle they will be driving, when looking to hire someone you’ll need to ensure they have the correct qualifications and strong experience. Agencies can also help you through the sometimes confusing license requirements.

But to get you started, here’s an overview: Firstly there no use of the terms HGV (Heavy Good Vehicle) and LGV (Light Goods Vehicle) in practice. Next, the common terms Class 1 and Class 2 licences have been superseded with C+E and C provisions respectively due to European harmonisation. Finally the driver must be over 18 years old and hold a category B license, although more likely they will have gained a category C+E provision to be able to take on the majority of jobs.

But what do all these classes mean? AM, P and Q - mopeds; A1, A2 and A - motocycles; B1 - light vehicles and quad bikes; B - cars, up to 3.5 tons; C1 - medium sized vehicles, up to 7.5 tons; C - over 3.5 tons, D1 - minibuses; and D buses. In addition, an ‘E’ is added to signify a trailer - for example: C+E. There are other more specific classes, but these are the most common.

However, if you explain clearly what you need in terms of lorry weight / size to reputable recruitment agencies they will be able to provide drivers with the right qualifications and licenses. They will also ensure that they have checked the drivers don’t have a criminal record and have the right the work in the UK. Contract drivers will also have a number of years of experience also.

Typically agencies will not supply vehicles themselves with the driver, but some may be able to provide a complete end-to-end service if that’s what is required. But be very clear who is providing insurance, and on what terms - i.e. fully comprehensive or just 3rd party.

You must also need to let the agency know if you require the driver to carry out any additional duties, such as loading / unloading or dealing with any paperwork required as they collect or drop-off loads, be qualified to deal with any particular hazardous loads, or drive abroad.

It goes without saying that you will be responsible for the vehicle supplied - which must be in working order, safe to drive and fully licensed.

So this will have given you an overview of the main things to bear in mind when hiring driving staff from agencies.

Hiring temps in Manchester

Manchester's business scene is very varied - from traditional manufacturing companies, to more recently, digital and technology startups, and growing at a fast pace! If you're looking for staff in Manchester to help you grow your business, look no further! TempaGoGo helps you find local recruitment agencies, matched to your exact needs and working location.

Manchester is a city in the county of Greater Manchester, England and falls within the M3 postcode district and in 2017 saw average earnings of £34,751 per annum. Manchester has a population of around 520,739 and is the UK's 7th largest town.

Historically, it was the world’s first industrialised city, which fell into decline, but over the past decade has grown faster than London in economic terms.

It is home to both the wealthy but also many living below the breadline - on some measures, it is the 4th most deprived local authority in England.

Manchester University is considered one the UK’s best educational establishments, ranked just behind Cambridge and Oxford. This is helping the city becoming an economic knowledge-led centre. It is a key location for many foreign companies, and home to more than half of the North West’s top 500 enterprises. Therefore in Manchester the biggest employment sectors are professional, scientific & technical, accommodation & food services and business administration & support services.

Manchester’s employment headcount was estimated to be at 467,900 in Q3 2018, and expected to grow to 475,000 in Q3 2019, according to the Centre for Economics and Business Research, a faster growth rate than London.

Manchester has a larger proportion of working population employed in the manufacturing sector (19.0% vs. 16.6% across the country), and larger proportion of economically active people without qualifications (9.8% vs. 7.8% in the UK).

While affected by the decline in manufacturing (and in particular the reduction in car sales) in the country, Manchester is also home to very successful companies in the digital, technology, healthcare and creative sectors, which are performing well and driving the growth in employment in the city.

Manchester’s attractiveness is also supported by the Northern Powerhouse initiative launched by the 2010-2015 coalition government to boost the British economy outside London, thanks to heavy investments in Transport (e.g., £100m investment in the Ordsall Chord linking Manchester Picadilly and Manchester Victoria, potential investment in High Speed 3 linking Manchester to Leeds), the Arts (£110m invested in The Factory theater) and Technology.

Adidas, Siemens, Kellogg’s, boohoo.com, The Co-operative Group, Henri Lloyd, Autotrader, booking.com amongst many others have head offices located in Manchester. In August 2019, it was revealed that MoneySuperMarket had chosen Manchester to relocate its technology and data staff.

The average hourly pay in Manchester for full-time workers, at £13.30 / hour, is slightly lower than the UK average, at £14.35 per hour. Paying candidates the market rate is important to be able to attract the best. If you don't know what to pay for your temporary staff, do not fear! TempaGoGo suggests you what you should typically pay for the vacancy you're looking to fill.
