TempaGoGo works with temp recruitment agencies across the whole of the UK filling caretaker jobs.
Caretakers, also sometimes called handymen or handywomen, are recruited to look after buildings and maintain premises. They work primarily in schools, community housing, commercial buildings or hospitals, both indoors and outdoors.
“Jack of all trades”, caretakers come from a variety of backgrounds - they might previously have worked as electricians, plumbers, cleaners, gardeners or builders, or may simply have GCSEs in Maths and English and love DIY! They need to be able to use power hand-tools, and might need to do some heavy lifting or work at height.
When interviewing a caretaker, you should check that they have great attention to details, that they are resourceful and able to solve problems as they arise. Discussing with them real-life case studies can be a great way to check their “can-do” attitude, for example: “Imagine a situation where you identify that residents are blocking the fire exits. What would you do?”
Checking that they have a good knowledge of fire regulations and Health and Safety rules is crucial too. They need to be able to communicate in an articulated way, as they might need to either escalate issues to the Facilities or Estate Manager, or need to inform residents or employees about unsafe behaviours and influence them to change.
Even though they typically report to the Facilities or Operations Manager, they often work by themselves, sometimes over the weekends, or at night, so it’s important for you to ask for references from prior employers. If working in a school, hospital or community housing, they will need enhanced background checks.
You probably have a good idea of what you need a caretaker to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically caretakers will perform the following duties:
Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £11.69 and £14.64 per hour for caretakers. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.
