What to look for when recruiting temp fabricators

You need to understand whether you need a fabricator or a welder. Welders fabricate an item by joining different metals together using heat, whilst fabricators will cut, bend, shape, weld and finish an item - i.e. the full end-to-end process.

Therefore a proper fabricator will have a broader set of skills, which will have probably taken time to learn and practice. There are a number of qualifications they might have gained such as City & Guilds 3268 levels 1, 2 and 3, and NVQ levels 2 and 3. At this level the fabricator should have a good understanding of all the different types of welding, and processes to shape and form metal, plus be able to read blue prints. Some will have gained their skill in the military also.

You should ask the agency for a good understanding of their candidates' skills, formal qualifications and work experience to date. If possible references would be useful, especially if they can find people who have worked on similar types of work that you need completing.

Use specialist agencies that understand the construction industry and trades rather than generalists, if you are going to find a better set of candidates. And remember, given these skills can be in short supply, you may need to engage with a number of agencies to find your ideal fabricator.

You probably have a good idea of what you need a fabricator to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically fabricators will perform the following duties:

  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Measuring and marking out plates and sections for cutting, shaping and drilling
  • Operating plate-cutting and edge preparation machines
  • Cutting slots in metal and drilling or punching holes
  • Using roll bending machines and presses to form and shape plates and sections
  • Guiding cranes and hoists for moving and assembling plates
  • Operating CNC computer-controlled and hand-controlled machines

Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £15.81 and £19.77 per hour for fabricators. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.
