What to look for when recruiting a temp groundworker

A groundworker is present at the very start and very end of a construction project. You may need to hire a groundworker as part of a house-building, commercial building or road building project.

At the start of the building project, a groundworker clears the site, digs the ground with a shovel or with the help of a hand-powered tool and excavates the earth. The groundworker then mixes the mortars and concrete by hand or using a mixer, and lays the concrete foundations, install the drainage, ducting and connect the pipes.

At the very end of the building project, the groundworker provides help with the landscaping: they may create terraces, driveways, footpaths using concrete slabs or pebbles, or even create kerbs and roads.

While no qualification is required, and groundworkers may learn their trade on the job, you may require your candidates to have completed a groundworker apprenticeship or to have followed a college course Level 1 or 2 in Groundwork and General Construction or have obtained a Level 2 Certificate / Diploma from the City and Guilds (6709 - Construction Operations - General Construction).

As they work on a construction site, you will need your groundworker to hold a CSCS card.

You may need your groundworker to have a 360 Excavator ticket.

While no CV or interview might be required if you’re hiring your groundworker via a recruitment agency, you’ll need to ensure that the candidate has a great level of fitness as it is a demanding role, that does not stop with bad weather conditions.

You probably have a good idea of what you need a groundworker to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically groundworkers will perform the following duties:

  • General groundworking responsibilities: drainage, concreting, flagging, kerbing, paving
  • Assisting tradesmen when required

Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £19.25 and £21.96 per hour for groundworkers. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.
