What to look for when recruiting temp heating and plumbing engineers

Heating and plumbing engineers (HPE) are responsible for installing, servicing, maintaining or decommissioning heating and plumbing systems.

They may need to install fuel-based, gas, electric heating systems (e.g., underfloor heating, boilers, radiators, cylinders) or even systems based on renewable energy (e.g., powered by the sun, wind, or biomass).

They can also be involved in the installation of bathrooms (including toilets), or emergency repair of plumbing systems from leaking taps, toilets or pipes.

They’ll need to be able to carry out gas safety inspections and inspect installations.

You may require your engineers to drive from site to site, and need to check that they have a valid UK driving licence.

When you discuss with former employers to check their references, don’t forget to ask about their attention to details, ability to work under limited supervision, problem-solving skills, and customer skills.

In terms of qualifications required, check that they have either an intermediate apprenticeship as a building services engineering installer or an advanced apprenticeship as a building services engineering craftsperson. Alternatively, they may have completed a college course and obtained a Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating or a Level 3 Diploma in Building Services Engineering. They may also need to be Gas Safe Registered.

You probably have a good idea of what you need a heating and plumbing engineer to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically heating and plumbing engineers will perform the following duties:

  • Carrying out varied plumbing work (incl. first and second fix): e.g., fixing breakdowns, performing diagnostics and repairs, servicing or installing heating systems, general plumbing
  • Installing boilers
  • Commissioning, testing and installing system radiators and thermostatic radiator valves

Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £24.75 and £32.22 per hour for heating and plumbing engineers. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.
