What to look for when recruiting temp housekeepers

Housekeepers are typically employed by hotels or cleaning companies, and have a wide range of duties.

Housekeepers are generally required to clean bedrooms and bathrooms, empty the bins, change the bedsheet. Depending on your needs, you may also require your housekeeper to manage the laundry, provide help with the ironing, arrange flower bouquets and polish your silver or furniture.

No qualification is required, and your candidate might either learn on the job or have a prior experience in cleaning. However, you might want to prioritise candidates who have followed a college course in Housekeeping - for example, a Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles or in Hospitality Industry Skills, or who have completed a hospitality supervisor advanced apprenticeship.

Checking prior references is key - you may ask their prior employers about their attention to details, diligence, ability to work independently under limited supervision, discretion and level of care: how do they handle guests’ personal belongings? Do they have a tendency to break precious objects or damage painted walls and wallpapers?

At interview, asking your candidate to share their experience, and in particular the type of work environment they’ve been used to is important too - was it a luxurious spa, or a 1-star hotel?

Finally, ensuring that the candidate doesn’t have allergies to dust, pets (if your hotel or premises accept cats and dogs) or cleaning products, and that they’re able to lift objects, such as a vacuum cleaner up the stairs for example, is fundamental.

You probably have a good idea of what you need a housekeeper to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically housekeepers will perform the following duties:

  • General housekeeping duties (hoovering, dusting, sweeping, polishing, mopping)
  • Emptying and cleaning bins
  • Using approved cleaning products and cleaning equipment appropriately

Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £11.28 and £17.57 per hour for housekeepers. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.
