What to look for when recruiting temp painters

You may need to recruit a painter or decorator to renovate residential buildings (e.g., a home or apartment) or as part of a new build (e.g., offices, industrial, hospitality or commercial buildings).

No qualification is required and painters can join your company straight after school, but if you’re working on a luxury development, you might want to take on painters decorators who have either completed a painting apprenticeship, have followed a college course (Level 1 Certificate / Diploma in Painting and Decorating (Basic Construction Skills or Construction Crafts)) or have at least 2 years of experience with great references.

Asking them for examples of prior work and pictures of the work they’ve undertaken can give you a good sense of their skills, attention to details, level of care and accuracy, and the type of environments they’ve been used to work in (e.g., indoors, outdoors).

Checking that they’re keen to work independently, on their feet most of the day, but are great team players too is important.

At interview, you could ask them how they would prepare and protect a site prior to painting, and what they would use undercoats and primers for.

If you need them to decorate the premises, you’ll need to check they have experience applying wallpaper - from measuring the wallpaper, to cutting it with the minimal waste and pasting it.

If you need them to work on multiple sites, ensure that they have a clean UK driving licence.

Finally, if they work on a construction site, don’t forget to ask them to have a CSCS card.

You probably have a good idea of what you need a painter to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically painters will perform the following duties:

  • Painting
  • Decorating (interior and exterior work)

Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £16.50 and £21.96 per hour for painters. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.

Our agencies don't just supply painters...

TempaGoGo's recruitment agencies cover a very wide range of skills
