Finding the right roofer will depend on your needs and the type of roof that needs to be built or renovated.
Do you need a “shingler”, i.e., a roofer able to install tiles and slates; a “metal roofer”, able to work with zinc for example; a "flat roofer” who has experience with foam roofs; or a “hot” roofer, specialised in tar or bitumen roofs; or do you need someone who has experience with green roofs, repairing leaking chimneys or installing ridge tiles?
As a skill with high level of shortages, hiring good roofers who can not only build or repair roofs, but also install roof timbers, skylight windows, gutters and cut leads flashing, is not easy. You’ll need to check that they’re able to work at heights and have a great level of fitness, as their work will involve lifting heavy tiles, bending and kneeling and working in tough weather conditions (sun, wind, rain).
Great candidates may have completed a 2-year intermediate roofer apprenticeship, or have followed a college Level 2 Diploma in Roofing Occupations or Roof Slating and Tiling.
If you require them to work on a heritage site, you may require your candidate to have completed a Level 3 Diploma in Heritage Skills (Construction) Roof Slating and Tiling.
If the roofer works on a construction site, you’ll need to ensure that they have a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
You probably have a good idea of what you need a roofer to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically roofers will perform the following duties:
Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £15.12 and £19.04 per hour for roofers. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.
