What to look for when recruiting a temp van driver

At a time when more and more customers shop online, van deliveries are a common sight on our streets.

When recruiting a van driver to drive a van of up to 3.5 tonnes, you’ll need first to check that they have a clean standard UK driving licence (category B) and that the vehicle they’re driving is fully taxed, up-to-date with its MOT and insured. Then, you might want to ask them what type of vans they’ve been used to drive: was it City vans (e.g., Renault Kangoo); Short wheel base vans (e.g., Ford Transit); Long wheel vans (e.g., Mercedes Sprinters) or Luton Vans?

Ensuring that they can lift heavy goods and that they know how to safely load and unload goods is really important both for safety reasons and to ensure that the goods are not damaged while in transit.

A great knowledge of the local area is also a real plus, as it will allow your drivers to optimise their delivery schedule, for example if they’re stuck in traffic.

If your company uses a GPS tracking system, you might want to ask the candidate if they have experience using similar technologies. If not, you would need to take into account the time required to train them when they start working for you.

Last but not least, as they’re often faced directly with your customers, great verbal communication and interpersonal skills are really vital. They might have to phone customers on their way to inform them about a delay for example. A simple role play during an interview can give you a good sense of how they would handle the situation. For example, you can ask them: “You’re stuck in a traffic jam and will have 3 hours of delay - you need to inform your next client. What do you do in this situation?”.

You probably have a good idea of what you need a van driver to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically van drivers will perform the following duties:

  • Delivering goods to customer homes within timed delivery slots
  • Planning the most efficient route
  • Providing outstanding customer service
  • Maintaining timely communications by phone with the customer to keep them informed of issues or changes to their proposed delivery
  • Loading and unloading the van

Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £11.69 and £15.38 per hour for van drivers. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.
