What to look for when recruiting temp welders

Many companies may turn to a temp recruitment agency to hire a welder, as they are often needed for jobs that might take no more than a few days. It can also make sense when you might require someone for a longer phase of a project, but giving you the flexibility to pause should other factors delay the work, as if often the case on construction projects.

When you need some welding work undertaken, it's worth bearing in mind that it is a skilled trade, that takes a few years of training and experience to become proficient at. Whilst it might be tempting to rent some of the equipment and do-it-yourself, or by one of your workers - the best advice is to get a professional in.

Typically, professionals start their career journey by signing up for an apprenticeship, and perhaps look to gain a Level 2 certificate in fabrication and welding (QCF). Later on, they might gain a CPD certificate in welding as they progress and gain experience. Hiring a temp welder will make it more likely that you have the job done properly, to a high standard and safely. There’s nothing more frustrating that having to repeat the work later! A temp welder will have also built up experience on a range of jobs, and thus will likely get to work more quickly, knowing what to do.

Welders may specialise in electric arc, friction, electron beam, ultrasound and laser welding. They may well refer to MIG, TIG, MMA and oxyacetylene techniques. You will need to check if the welder will bring their own equipment, or whether you will need to rent it in addition to their costs. Furthermore, some welders might specialise in certain environments, such as ‘at-height’ or underwater.

Finally keep in mind that being a welder is a tough job and you will find that you’ll need to pay significantly more, not just for the more advanced techniques but if you need them to work in hazardous environments or hi-tech industries, where the ability to make and test the perfect weld will be vital.

The agency will be able to help you through this, to ensure you get the right person for your job.

You probably have a good idea of what you need a welder to do for you. But to make things easy, we give you a job description to start from and a suggested budget. Typically welders will perform the following duties:

  • Working on build / weld fixtures
  • Fabricating and MIG welding to a high standard
  • Spotting visual faults and correcting them in a timely manner
  • Carrying out occasional manual lifting

Typically, recruitment agencies will charge between £13.75 and £20.50 per hour for welders. This includes what the candidate is paid, their National Insurance and holiday payments, as well as the agency margin. Your budget should take into account the experience of the secretary and their working location. For example, expect to pay more in London, where the Living Wage is £10.55 per hour.
